“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus...preach the word.” (2 Timothy 4:1-2)
Preaching the Bible is at the heart of our corporate worship because only the inspired and inerrant words of God, not the ideas of man, will grow God’s people in faith and number (Acts 6:7). This is why the preaching you’ll hear at SIBC is mainly “expositional.” While “topical” sermons can be useful at times, we want to expose God’s life-transforming word passage-by-passage, week after week, just as God’s people have been doing for millennia (Neh. 8:8).
“And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.” (Acts 6:7)
“They read from the book of the law of God, interpreting and explaining it so the people could understand what was read.” (Nehemiah 8:8)
Because all Scripture is divinely inspired and profitable (2 Tim. 3:16) and powerful (Rom. 1:18; Heb. 4:12), we seek to preach the “whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27) by explaining any given passage in the context of the Bible’s big story, connecting it to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and applying it to the heart, so that hearers may respond and grow in faith (Rom. 10:14-17).
“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)
“The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
“The gospel is the power of God for salvation…And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?…So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” (Romans 1:18; 10:14-17)
